After much discussion we can now announce that the next Cornwall Social Media Café will take place in the Vertigo Bar, Truro on the night of Tuesday 12th May from 7pm.
Local web development company, UKNetWeb will be sponsoring the event with £50.00 towards some light snacks and food for everyone
Please book in for this event on EventBrite by clicking the button below
The event will follow a similar path to last time, with the introduction of a couple of topics for light conversation…
Digital Britain – Unconference
CSMC member, Fiona Campbell-Howes (@patroclus), suggested that we chat about the Digital Britain report and some of the issues that potentially affect the digital industry and the wider community here in Cornwall.
The official government deadline for feedback was in March, but BBC Technology Correspondent, Bill Thomson (@billt) who is one of the people organizing the ‘unconferences‘ says that unofficially the government is still listening, with the final report due to be published in early summer.
Fiona will bring some copies of the report and will prepare our feedback for publication on the CSMC blog and to be passed back to the Unconference organisers.
[I must stress that this will be a very informal discussion and will not take the form of presentations, speeches or other such formality. Those not wishing to take part can continue as they please. ]
The Future of Cornwall Social Media Café
Laura (@laura_mckay2009) and I would love to get your feedback on how we run future events. Principally the key questions emerging at the moment appear to be:
• Should the Café be on the same night each month?
• Should meetings travel around Cornwall or stay in one location?
• Should there be speakers, topics of other elements added to the agenda?
Please make your opinions known to us on the night so that we can build them into future plans.
Thank you once again for all your interest and support we look forward to seeing you soon.
All the best, Aren (@arengrimshaw).

Hi everyone, just to expand a bit on the Digital Britain aspect of the CSMC meet-up:
There is an opportunity for people working within the tech/web/digital industry in the UK to provide feedback on the Government’s interim Digital Britain report, which sets out government strategy for this country’s digital future.
The final version of the report will be published in the summer, and even though the official feedback date has passed, unofficially there is still time to comment and maybe influence government policy in this area.
Over the next 10 days or so there are informal ‘unconference’ events taking place all round the country to gather feedback on the report. More details can be found here http://digitalbritainunconference.wordpress.com/.
The full version of the report can be found at http://www.culture.gov.uk/images/publications/digital_britain_interimreportjan09.pdf (PDF – 1.5MB) .
Some of the things we might want to comment about include:
- ways to help grow Cornwall’s digital economy
- how to ensure that people in the county (from school pupils to the elderly) are able to learn the digital skills that will help them do everything from finding a good job locally to setting up a business to overcoming loneliness to shopping online.
As Aren says it’ll just be an informal discussion and if any ideas come out of it – or if you already have ideas – I can write them up after the event and submit them as the feedback from Cornwall.
Look forward to seeing you on the 12th – and do let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.
Fiona
